Taylor Swift: John Mayer is ‘presumptuous’ to think ‘Dear John’ is about him

Taylor Swift: John Mayer is ‘presumptuous’ to think ‘Dear John’ is about him

Taylor Swift has made it clear she writes about her romances. In March 2010, she reportedly had a brief fling with John Mayer after the two collaborated on a song together. Then seven months later, she released her album, Speak Now, which included the song "Dear John" about an older guy who broke her heart. Everyone assumed it was about Mayer — even he did, telling Rolling Stone earlier this year that it was "a really lousy thing for her to do." However, Swift says not so fast.

"How presumptuous!" she tells Glamour in an interview to promote her new album, Red, out October 22. "I never disclose who my songs are about." When ABC's Cynthia McFadden, who interviewed Swift for the magazine, attempts to read Mayer's quotes, the country singer cuts her short. "No! I don't want to know, I don't want to know. I know it wasn't good, so I don't want to know. I put a high priority on staying happy, and I know what I can't handle. It's not that I'm this egomaniac and I don't want to hear anything negative, because I do keep myself in check. But I've never developed that thick a skin. So I just kind of live a life, and I let all the gossip live somewhere else. If you go too far down the rabbit hole of what people think about you, it can change everything about who you are."
12 secret signs he's into you
Swift, 22, also didn't want to dish any details about her newest romance with 18-year-old high school student Conor Kennedy, whom she spent most of her summer with in Massachusetts (she even bought the house across the street from his family's home). "I don't talk about my personal life in great detail," she says. "I write about it in my songs, and I feel like you can share enough about your life in your music to let people know what you're going through."

But Swift did open up a little about the L-word in another interview with the U.K. edition of Marie Claire, in which she says she does still believe in it "even after it explodes into a million pieces and burns down and you're standing in a pile of the ash of what it once was thinking, 'Why did I have to meet this person, why did this have to happen?' But then, when you make eye contact with someone across the room and it clicks and, bam, you're there. In love again."
10 things he's thinking when you're naked
Her songs may make it sound like Swift falls in love with every guy she meets, but she clarifies that although that seems like the case, she only likes someone "if it's the right person." Of course, some guys turn into Mr. Wrong (cough, John Mayer, cough), and then she gets revenge … in song. "Music is absolutely everything that I am and everything that I stand for," she explains, careful to not name names. "It's not my fault if someone gets into a relationship with me and then cheats and I write a song about it."
There was another relationship that Swift was happy to talk about: the one with her famous BFFs Selena Gomez and Emma Stone. "They are so important in my life right now," she tells Glamour. "I'm the kind of girl who needs to tell her friends everything. I've developed this really close-knit group of girls … I met Emma when I was 17, and I met Selena when I was 18. So they've experienced all of this with me, and they've also experienced their own amazing success, and somehow through all of it, we've stayed close."

Of course, she has some non-Hollywood friends, too, including two of her female bandmates. When asked whether she's ever worried that some people may try to align themselves with her only because of her fame and her money, Swift acknowledges that she knows it's a possibility … but it could be worse. "I think you can tell who's a good person to be around, who makes you laugh, who's fun, whom you can trust," she says. "And, yes, you're going to get burned a few times, but I'd really rather get burned a few times than sit alone in that house with the curtains drawn. So God forbid this person you're hanging out with gets a bit of validation out of the fact you're famous. Is that the worst-case scenario? You know, it doesn't seem that bad."

Arnold Schwarzenegger's marriage to Maria Shriver was full of secrets

Arnold Schwarzenegger's marriage to Maria Shriver was full of secrets

Arnold Schwarzenegger can keep a secret – and he kept many from his wife of 25 years, Maria Shriver.
[Related: Arnold Schwarzenegger on Affair: 'Worst Thing I've Ever Done']
Appearing on “60 Minutes” Sunday to promote his new book, Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story, Schwarzenegger – who referred to himself as “an expert in living in denial” – said he hid many things from his wife during their marriage. Of course one of those was his affair with the family housekeeper Mildred Baena, which produced a child and ultimately ended his marriage. During the interview, the 65-year-old actually 'fessed up to cheating on Shriver on multiple occasions and keeping other potentially life-changing secrets from her, including having open heart surgery and deciding to run for governor of California.
“That's the way I handle things,” Schwarzenegger said of keeping secrets. “And it always has worked. But, I mean it does not – it's not the best thing for people around me because I sometimes – some information I just keep to myself.”

Opening up about having heart surgery in 1997, Schwarzenegger recounted telling his doctor that he would be keeping the operation a secret from his then-pregnant wife. “I said, ‘Now here's the plan. … I'm going to have the heart surgery. You do it quietly. No one knows about it,” the “Expendables 2” star said. “We’ll do it at six in the morning, and then four days later I'm outta here and I go down to Mexico. And I'll tell Maria, I'll say, ‘Look I'm down here. Little busy. And I'm on vacation.’ And when I come back I will be tanned. No one will know. He said, ‘Arnold, are you outta your mind? … You're going to have a big scar here on the chest. What do you mean your wife is not going to see the scar?"
[Related: Arnold Schwarzenegger talks about his affair with housekeeper in '60 Minutes' interview]
Schwarzenegger took a similar approach when it came to running for governor. He said he waited to tell Shriver until just a few days before he made the announcement and she was shaken by the news. “I was thinking that she would say, ‘Wow, that is amazing, welcome to the club. We finally convinced you to be a public servant, just like my entire family,’” said Schwarzenegger. “None of that. So all of a sudden it came to a grinding halt and I had to now deal with the drama.” It was his mother-in-law, Eunice Shriver, who convinced her daughter to support her husband during his run.
Shriver later gave up her career as a TV news journalist, and started campaigning for her husband. She also publicly defended him when he was accused of groping more than a dozen women earlier in his career. When asked if he regretted having her vouch for him – at that point, Schwarzenegger had already secretly impregnated their housekeeper Mildred Baena – the actor said no. “No, she vouched – she says, ‘Look. I know Arnold. He doesn't do those things that you have read. And I am his wife, I know him better than that.’ You know, end of story.”
Schwarzenegger spoke more about Baena, most notably the fact that he and the woman never had a conversation about the obvious fact that Joseph was the actor’s son. He said seven or eight years after their affair, he noticed the boy resembled him and he just started sending Baena money to support the child. “It just appeared to me there was something off, that he started looking like me,” Schwarzenegger said. “So that's when I kind of got it. It was never discussed. … I gave [money] to her and she knew what it was about.”

As we previously reported, during the interview Schwarzenegger also talked about the moment Shriver confronted him about Joseph. The day after he left office in 2011, Shriver asked to meet him with their marriage counselor. “That particular visit that you're talking about was the visit where she then said, ‘Hey, I think that Joseph is your kid. And, am I off here on this or – or not?’” he recalled. “I said, ‘You're absolutely right, and I am sorry.’ It was very painful for her. She was very disappointed.”
That wasn’t her only disappointment. Asked if it was his only affair, Schwarzenegger – who also spoke about a “hot affair” with Brigitte Nielsen – said, “No. I had others. But I mean, ah, but you know, it’s something that’s obviously between Maria and me.”
[Related: Arnold Schwarzenegger confirms 'hot affair' with Brigitte Nielsen]
Although he knows he hurt his wife, Schwarzenegger said he’s not hung up on the failure of his marriage – or anything else. “Dwelling on it, like some people do, you know, years later, say, ‘Oh, yeah, I lost this, and I will never forget that. I'm still suffering.’ No, that's not me,” he said. “I don't suffer over anything that I've lost.”

Lamar Odom reportedly wants to apologize to Mark Cuban for his poor play in Dallas

Lamar Odom reportedly wants to apologize to Mark Cuban for his poor play in Dallas

Last year, Lamar Odom's play was so miserable that reporting on his ongoing failings became a man-bites-dog situation. Once he did something of positive note, we concluded, it wasn't worth dealing with. Until he turned it around, though, Odom's miserable play wasn't worth breathlessly documenting every time out. The hole had been dug too deeply; by Odom and Odom alone.
Upset after a near-trade to New Orleans and eventual deal to Dallas, Odom showed up out of shape and disinterested to Dallas Mavericks camp in December of 2011, despite getting to join the 2010-11 champs as they moved to defend their crown. What followed was several months of indifferent, frustrating basketball from one of the NBA's most talented players, before the Mavs gave up and sent Odom home a month before their season (and attempted championship defense, with Odom counted on to play a large role) ended.
Now, he's apparently attempting (or has already succeeded in) apologizing to Mavericks owner Mark Cuban for a season gone wrong. ESPN's Ric Bucher is reporting as much, telling his Twitter followers that …
Lamar Odom, unprompted, told me he'd like to apologize to Mark Cuban and Mavs fans for not being himself. Felt it was beyond his power.
"Felt it was beyond his power." Bucher's words, we should note, before we tear into Lamar.
Cuban, at Mavericks training camp, declined comment, according to ESPN.
Odom's a Los Angeles Clipper right now, and according to one trustworthy reporter (and, like us, a massive Lamar Odom fan) at Clippers camp last week, he hasn't exactly come into work chiseled-out all Lakers-style. An appearance made somewhat worse by telling the Clippers' own website this, in an interview over the weekend:
On his conditioning entering training camp:
"It could be better, but that's what camp is for, to prepare for the season."
The deal that almost sent Odom to New Orleans, away from his preferred home in Los Angeles (a city that, save for the 2003-04 and 2011-12 seasons, he's played exclusively in from 1999 to 2013, barring a trade this year), and eventually to the Mavericks came on the heels of a miserable few months for the versatile forward. His team was swept out of the playoffs in May of 2011, which served as a mere annoyance in comparison to what happened in July — back home in New York to attend the funeral of his cousin, Lamar's hired SUV driver ran into a 15-year-old boy, who died a few days later.
The trades followed five months later, on the heels of a prolonged lockout. And while most NBA players were excused to be a little out of shape following the NBA barring them from working with team trainers, and the rushed training camp, Lamar took the cake-or-candy-or-whatever-confection-you-want-to-use-to-make-this-cliché-feel-better-to-you.
That, and he seemed hell-bent on punishing the Mavericks for dealing for him. Which is weird, because it was the Lakers that dealt him for nothing, leaving themselves prone against the team that swept them from the playoffs seven months before.
Remember, this was a guy who was also just seven months removed from working as the NBA's top Sixth Man, and yet he worked as one of the worst rotation players in the NBA last season. Just a year after shooting 53 percent from the floor, the 48 percent career shooter made just 35 percent of his attempts in 2011-12, and the career 70 percent free-throw shooter (all marks taken prior to 2011-12) made only 59 percent of his free throws last season.
His assists dropped, his rebounds fell precipitously, and his off-ball defense was somehow worse than his individual defense. This wasn't a case of our scouting and summation exacerbated by Odom's considerable promise, or his potential on a team that could have done great things in 2011-12 (before falling in the first round) -- he truly was that bad.
And if Lamar thinks that things were "beyond his power," well, he's off.
It must be a frustrating existence, but players get traded. Even great ones. Odom may not be among the greats, but he is amongst the pretty good ones that other teams covet. The Lakers dealt Odom for pure payroll relief and a trade exception that they later used to deal in exchange for Steve Nash last July, and while the Mavs did hamstring their own rotation by letting Tyson Chandler go, the combination of forwards including Odom could have made up for that during an inspired playoff run.
Instead, Odom's play let everyone remind themselves that 2011-12 just didn't count. That it wasn't worth it for a number of teams, including the Lakers and Mavs. Which is all nonsense, of course, because both outfits could have done better.
And if Lamar doesn't enjoy being dealt? Then sign a one-year contract every summer, instead of loading up for the long guaranteed deal, as he did back in the summer of 2009. This allows greater flexibility from year to year, taken in exchange for less money. It's a trade-off few players would enjoy, or utilize, but a necessary move if you don't want to be traded and only like playing in Los Angeles.
(And if "beyond his power" means that Odom is dealing with internal frustrations that might need medication and/or therapy? Then by all means follow that route. Because no successful NBA season as a do-it-all forward is worth being unhappy on the inside. We'd miss watching Lamar play, as he sorts things out; but we also sort of missed watching him play when he did suit up last year. Only a fool would criticize Odom for taking that healthier route.)
As it has been for half of LO's career, the onus is on him. He was brilliant as a rookie, and then disappeared soon after. Fantastic for a year in Miami before settling a bit in Los Angeles. A marvelous element to a fantastic championship Lakers team in 2009 and 2010, and Sixth Man nonpareil in 2011. A mess last year. A question mark, this season.
A season that he is completely in charge of. Fully within his power. Do something with it, Lamar. And understand that Mark Cuban might not be so quick to forgive.
